Tim Gunn's assessment of Grey Gardens

What did Tim Gunn say about our favorite film Grey Gardens in his book?

A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style (Tim Gunn's Guide to Style)A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style

The film is also an excellent cautionary tale for those who feel there is no harm in moving home. Suddenly thirty years have past and you are wearing flea collars around your ankles.

And Bagel Blog's response?

From Bagel Blog, on 16 December 2007

I really don't want that to happen to me.

Cute!

(I wouldn't want it to happen to me as Tim Gunn assesses it, but this raccoon is fine with becoming more fabulous in 30 years' time!)

Chanel taps into Little Edie's fashion sense

Somehow I missed another major use of Grey Gardens style in a recent major fashion show, and thanks to Lynne for pointing it out!

By Lynne Chukhin

More Edie-influenced fashion

I'm still seeing Edie's fashion sense everywhere. Chanel wrapped this model's head with a sweater and encrusted it with brooches.

Chanel's creations for this fall/winter feature lots of close-to-the-head wraps; you can browse them under Fashion Shows > Fall/Winter 2007/8 Haute Couture.

The ads on the Chanel site are gorgeous! Edie would be so pleased!

Also visit Style.com's coverage of the show.

Grey Gardens Holiday Gift Guide 2007

If you're like me, you're faced with the problem of "What do I give the Grey Gardens fan who has everything?" Having been Grey Gardens evangelists among our friends for quite some time now, we've made our beds, and now we must lie in them. But worry not; your ol' pal has his gift guide to help you out!

Grey Gardens itself

  1. Grey Gardens Criterion Collection DVD

Were your friends introduced to Grey Gardens when it aired on TV? Or perhaps they got it through Netflix? Then they'll need the DVD of it. Regular viewing is the only way to get the quotes down verbatim.

  2. The Beales of Grey Gardens Criterion Collection DVD

The next step after having the Grey Gardens DVD is to have The Beales of Grey Gardens. It's not so much a separate film as it is a collection of outtakes, but it's still very fun to watch. Edith and Edie are as wonderful as they always are, and you get to see quite a bit more of Jerry Torre and Lois Wright as well.

If your friends don't have either Grey Gardens or The Beales, both DVDs are available as a set (although the video quality isn't as good in the set).

  3. Grey Gardens Masters of Cinema DVD

This next entry may surprise you. So you already have the Criterion Collection DVD of Grey Gardens but Buster is recommending that you get the UK edition as well? Absolutely. The DVD features are different, and the image quality is slightly better. And the booklet that comes with this DVD is extraordinary. You need this as well.

And, yes, we US customers can order from Amazon.co.uk and they will ship the DVD to the US and it will play on our DVD players. I was shocked, but in a good way!

  4. Grey Gardens 11" x 17" Reproduction Poster

I've requested Grey Gardens-inspired decorating tips from time to time here, and here's my tip to you: A poster from the documentary. You can get reproductions from Amazon for real cheap. I always hesitate to buy art for friends, but if they hate it, they can hang it in their attics over a pile of empty Wonder Bread bags. (And Wonder Bread would be a great accessory to this gift!)

Dig Deeper

  1. My Life at Grey Gardens by Lois Wright

If your friends are readers, or even if they're not, Lois Wright's book about life at Grey Gardens is a fascinating read.

  2. Grey Gardens the Musical original Broadway cast recording CD

The Grammy-nominated CD for the Grey Gardens musical is a great choice for friends who were exposed to the Edie Beales through the musical.

(There are also a Grey Gardens Songbook by Scott Frankel & Michael Korie and Grey Gardens: The Complete Book and Lyrics of the Broadway Musical by Doug Wright for musically-inclined fans.)

  3. Little Edie Live! A Visit to Grey Gardens audio CD

This CD is like a bonus feature on a DVD, only longer! It's Edie herself, and she's as wonderful as you would expect her to be.

  4. Art

There is plenty of great fan-made art available. This includes oil paintings and prints by Rowley, Julia Martin's divine oil paintings, giclée prints from Pacifico Palumbo, prints by Bruce Lennon, and coloring books.

Exhaust more possibilities

  1. Talk to Her: Interviews by Kristine McKenna

McKenna's book of interviews has a real gem in it: an interview with Little Edie Beale! It's accompanied by a paper doll-inspired illustration of Edie.

  2. Ghosts of Grey Gardens DVD

Liliana Greenfield-Sanders made this film about her love of Grey Gardens. My favorite part is the interview with Sally Quinn, which is very entertaining. Yet this raccoon didn't understand the performance art section of the film.

What not to give

There are a couple of potentially great gifts that unfortunately will not be ready by Christmas.

  1. Edith Bouvier Beale of Grey Gardens

If the website is any indication, this highly anticipated book will be great! However, the website makes it clear that this book won't be available until sometime next year. Not in time for Christmas, unfortunately.

We would like to advise you that this publication will be delayed and will not be ready for the Holiday season but after the new year.

  1. A Maysles Scrapbook: Photographs/Cinemagraphs/Documents
by Steven Kasher, Michael Chaiken, and Albert Maysles

Originally scheduled for release on 1 November 2007, this book was delayed as well.

And it's a Maysles scrapbook, not a Grey Gardens scrapbook. Who is to say how much Edie will be in it?

Estimated arrival date: 01/14/2008 - 01/16/2008

So, my friends, there you are! Please feel free to post additional tips and recommendations in the comments of this post.

Clothing previous owned by Edie Beale up for auction!

Let me start right off by saying that this is just a joke and that this shirt most definitely never belonged to Edie! It wouldn't have even fit her! Thanks to the eagle-eyed reader with a sense of humor who sent this in.

Without further ado...

From eBay, by vintagevantage

("Buddy" was the nickname of Edie's brother Bouvier Beale.)
